3D Poker Making Gains
February 28, 2007
Although many poker executives claimed that 3D poker would never amount to anything, new 3D poker rooms are proving them wrong. Rooms such as PKR and Pokerwize started slow, but have gained momentum as of late and are seeing record growth. In the near future, we may actually see a 3D Poker room become a "major" poker room as to the likes of Poker Stars or Full Tilt Poker.
The first room to discuss is PKR. Prior to launch, PKR had a huge following as a result of their excellent marketing campaign. However, the launch was delayed multiple times because of technical and legislative issues, and much of the hype was lost. Also, when PKR announced that they wouldn't accept players from the US, their balloon really deflated. However, they've rebounded greatly since then.
When PKR finally launched, their tables were mainly empty and the only tables with action were at the micro limits. But PKR has used a variety of fun promotions and marketing blitzes to increase their player base, and now there are many tables running even at the middle limit level.
Pokerwize is another room that has seen great growth. Their unique angle is that you play on a network with other poker rooms, so you are actually playing with a mix of Pokerwize players and 2D poker players. This gave them an instant player base, so they saw instant growth.
As these two rooms gain more players, you will see bigger freerolls, bigger tables, and bigger tournaments at the sites.
One thing holding back growth is computer speed. The 3D poker rooms all use more memory than 2D poker rooms, so you need a modern computer to play them. As computers get faster and faster, more people will be able to play 3D poker.
