How to Play Against Weak Poker Players

When you play against a weak poker player, you should use different strategy than when you're playing against average poker players. Although it may be fun to use sophisticated plays at the table, they will be less likely to work against a poor poker player, simply because they don't realize what you're doing. By avoiding bluffs and check raises against poor players, you will increase your winnings at the table.

To make the most money off of a bad poker player, just make the obvious play. Bet when you have a hand, and check/fold when you don't. The reason for this is because they are such a bad player. When you try to make a fancy place like trapping or check raising, you will just end up missing out on money. Let's take a look at example of this.

You have ace king of diamonds in dealer position. The weak player limps in before you, and you make a raise. He calls the raise, and the flop comes down all diamonds. Now, instead of checking you should be betting out against the player. The reason for this is if they have a diamond they are most likely going to call to try to hit the flush draw. Even if they only have the 10 of diamonds, they will probably think it's worth a call. After they call your bet on the flop, they will be more inclined to call a bet on the turn, and the river.

Okay, now let's look what would've happened if you tried trap. You check on the flop, and they check behind you. You check again on the turn, and they check behind you. If on the river they still didn’t hit their flush draw, you're going to get nothing out of them. By making a simple bet and building the pot, you'll get much more out of a weak player than by trapping.

Another point to remember when playing against a weak player is to never bluff. Often times quality players will try to bluff weak players out of hands, but will get called down. Since the weak player doesn't know what's a good hand and what's not, they're more likely to call with weak hands. Because of this you should avoid bluffing unless you're absolutely positive your opponent will fold.
